In late summer 2020, we went to the area of Arjeplog and Jokkmokk to look for the possibilities to start building a network of exta long fire scar chronologies extending seasonally resolved fire histories over at least 1000 years. The idea behind this effort is to extend the fire reconstruction to the onset of the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), with its climate conditions serving as a good analogy of projected future climate. Our pilot sampling effort resulted in about 400 samples distributed over 20 sites. Currently ongoing dating effort indicates that we reach early 900s AD on many of the sampled sites.
